After the chin, the cheeks are the second most commonly requested site for facial augmentation that we see at the Center for Facial Plastic Surgery and Laser Skin Care. There is nothing that reflects youth and glamour more strongly than prominent facial highlight along the cheek bones. Cheek augmentation achieves this result trough lifting and suspending the soft tissues of the face to restore a more youthful contour. It has the effect of softening the deep folds around the mouth and can helps with jowling. We can achieve cheek augmentation in a number of ways. Both implants and fillers can be used for this purpose. The decision as to which method to use is a personal one based on several considerations including downtime, degree of augmentation, and level of invasiveness.

Cheek Implant Procedure

Cheek implants are made of firm silicon. They come in a number of shapes and sizes. Cheek implants are inserted through an incision made inside the mouth. A small pocket is made over the cheek bones and the implant is placed on the surface of the bone. The incision is closed with dissolvable sutures. As with any procedure there is a moderate degree of swelling and discomfort managed with oral analgesics. Recovery times is one week. This procedure is generally performed by Dr. Falk in the operating room under sedation or deep anesthesia.

Fillers such as Radiesse and Scultpra can be injected through the skin to produce the desired level of cheek augmentation. A topical is first used to numb the skin prior to the injections to minimize pain. Fillers can be done in an additive fashion over more than one session. The fillers that Dr. Falk uses are long lasting but not permanent. The length of time that the improvement lasts is dependent on the material, and can vary from one to two years.
