Welcome to the Center for Facial Plastic Surgery, where we treat a number of different kinds of birthmarks including pigmented birthmarks and vascular birthmarks.
A congenital nevus is a brown or black pigmented spot that can appear on any surface of the body. By definition a congenital neius is present at birth. Over the course of time they can enlarge and the surface texture can change. They vary in size from very small to quite large. Sometimes there can be skin appendages associated with them like hairs. There are a number of clinical issues associated with congenital nevie. One being the cosmetic implications. When a lesion is present on the face or neck, they can cause a a degree of social unease and self-consciousness. Other concerns include the potential for degeneration into something more serious like melanoma. This risk while small, is not neglible, and may be higher with larger sized lesions. All these lesions should be followed with regular survilance. The treatment for these lesions is surgical excision. It a lesion is too large for complete removal, then sometime is may be necessary to perform a series of biopsies of the more suspicous regions.
Vascular Birthmarks are a broad category that encompases a number of distinct entities. Hemangiomas are vascular tumors of infancy. These tumors grow early on, and then regress. More information on hemangiomas and our apporach to their management can be found on additional pages.
Vascular malformations are abnormalities in the formation of blood vessels - veins, capillaries and arteries that give rise to structural abnormalities in the associated structures where they are found. We primarily treat malformations located in the region of the Head and Neck. You can find additional information on specific conditions such as portwine staines on associated pages.
