There is a broad spectrum of malformations of the cartilage that forms the external ear (auricle). These can range from the simplest condition that can be a protuberant ear to the most severe condition being the complete absence of the auricle called microtia. The procedures to correct cosmetically unacceptable prominent ears are relatively simple and described under the separate heading of otoplasty. This surgery is usually performed around school age. Microtia, the most severe form of auricular malformation, has both functional and aesthetic implications.
The lack of an ear canal results in conductive hearing loss, and the absence of an auricle is an obvious aesthetic issue as well as functional one when it comes to wearing glasses.
