The eyes have been the source of more poetic musing than perhaps all other facial features combined, and it comes as no surprise that cosmetic surgery to rejuvenate the eyelids is so popular. Thousands of individuals undergo corrective surgery each year to erase years from their appearance to reveal a brighter, more radiant version of yourself with this relatively quick and straight forward procedure.
Blepharoplasty is the technical term for cosmetic surgery of the upper and lower eyelids. It is important to be clear regarding what the surgery can achieve. The surgery is designed to correct droopiness of upper eyelid skin, and remove the puffiness and laxity of lower eyelid skin as a result of aging and heredity. Eyelid surgery alone cannot correct dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles, nor does it change brow position. Blepharoplasty may be combined with other procedures like browlifts, skin resurfacing, and BOTOX® to achieve comprehensive eyelid rejuvenation.
Excellent report between surgeon and patient is essential for successful facial plastic surgery. At the time of consultation, Albany Eyelid Surgeon, Dr. Falk will listen to your concerns, perform a comprehensive examination, and analyze your eyes in context of the rest of your facial features. A detailed medical history is essential, including specifically any history of ocular disease, such as dry eyes or glaucoma which may interfere with safely performing eyelid surgery.
Eyelid surgery is generally performed with twilight anesthesia or local alone. The surgery involves removal of skin, fat and muscle in the appropriated proportions. The upper eyelid incision is concealed in the upper lid creases. The lower eyelid incision is either inside the lower eyelid or just below the lash line. Dr. Falk will determine which approach is most appropriate based on your set of circumstances. The incisions are closed with fine sutures.
After surgery, patients are instructed on how to keep their incisions clean and use eye drops to prevent dryness. A certain degree of swelling and bruising is normal. Cold compresses and head elevation, enhance healing and relive discomfort. Permanent sutures are removed in five days. The swelling resolves quickly, and most patients are able to be in public at one week.
