The nose, as the central defining feature of the face, is certainly subject to intense scrutiny. Understandably, be it favorable or unfavorable, individuals tend to formulate very strong opinions about the size and shape of their nose. Rhinoplasty is the technical term for surgery that alters the shape of the nose. Operations on the nose can change many characteristics including remove a hump, narrow the width, refine the tip, and improve functional aspects of breathing. This is one of the most frequently requested facial plastic surgery procedures, and it is one of the most difficult operations to master. This is an area in which Albany Nose Surgeon, Dr Falk has particular expertise and training.
Successful facial plastic surgery is the result of an excellent rapport between patient and surgeon. There are many factors that influence the kinds of changes that one can come to expect from nasal surgery including ethnicity, thickness of the skin, and underlying skeletal framework. Dr. Falk, in the course of a consultation, will listen to your concerns and perform a thorough examination of the internal and external aspects of your nose, as well as analyze your nose in the context of the rest of your facial features. Photographs are taken as a basis for discussion and documentation. He will then discuss realistic expectations as to how to achieve a natural looking result consistent with a shared vision of what is optimal for you from both an aesthetic and functional perspective.
Rhinoplasty can be performed under either twilight or general anesthesia. There are two surgical approaches to the nose, and the one selected is dictated by your particular situation. The approach is either through incisions entirely inside the nose, (endonasal), or may incorporate a small external incision in the narrow strut of skin that separated the nostrils called the columella. After the operation is completed, a small amount of packing is placed internally, sometimes internal splints are used to secure tissues in place. A cast is placed on the outside of the nose and left in place for one week.
Postoperatively after nose surgery, patients experience a moderate degree of pain or discomfort accompanied by nasal congestion. These symptoms are well controlled with prescription medication. Mild bruising is expected after surgery, and tends to settle around the eyes. Head elevation and cold packs can significantly reduce the amount of swelling experienced. The cast, placed at the time of surgery, is removed after one week. When the cast is removed patients begin to enjoy their new appearance, although their nose will continue to undergo further refinements over a period of several months when the healing process is complete. Complications are rare, and we do everything in our power to minimize risks.
