Starting sometime around age thirty to thirty-five, some individuals notice that their cheek tissues appear to have dropped, drawing down the corners of their eyes and accentuating the folds between the cheeks and mouth, called nasolabial folds. Aesthetic surgeons refer to this process as midface descent. The midface lift is a procedure designed to reverse this trend by suspending the midface soft tissue structures. The result is higher suspended cheek tissue with a refreshing, youthful look to the face. It is a minimally invasive procedure performed with small incisions. It can be performed in isolation in the case of early aging without excessive skin laxity, or in conjunction with other facial procedures such as a browlift and facelift.
An endoscopic midface lift can be performed under twilight or general anesthesia. It involves small incision in the temple region and sometimes an intra-oral incision. The midface is suspended with sutures that grab the soft tissue structures and anchor them to a higher point by fixation to the deep connective tissue in the region of the temples.
After the surgery there may be a temporary elastic dressing over the face providing mild compression. Swelling is expected but generally resolves quickly within the first week. Ice packs and head elevation can significantly reduce selling. Permanent sutures in the hairline are removed in one week. The recovery is rapid, and patients can anticipate enjoying a more youthful continence in about one weeks time.
