Schenectady Facial Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Falk provides a variety of laser resurfacing treatments. Laser skin resurfacing is an ablative procedure, meaning that the surface epithelium is peeled as a complete layer to achieve repopulation with fresh new skin cells that results in a smooth, tighter and cleaner complexion. This can be advantageous when removing skin imperfections (moles and lesions), treating scarring and deep wrinkles. The two major lasers used for resurfacing are carbon dioxide and erbium based lasers. Erbium laser treatments provide more precise control over the removal of tissue, with less thermal damage than carbon dioxide lasers. This translates into faster recovery and less risk of long-term complications such as permanent loss of skin pigmentation (hypopigmentation) seen with carbon dioxide laser treatments.
Dr. Falk favors the Sciton Profile laser with long and short pulsing sequences that can mimic the tissue tightening effects of a pure carbon dioxide laser, thereby overcoming some of the initial short coming of first generation erbium resurfacing treatments. By adjusting laser parameters, we can precisely adjust the depth of our peels and degree of tissue tightening from superficial micropeels, to medium depth and deep peels. Recovery time for laser resurfacing procedures is dependent on the depth of injury, and can vary from 3-4 days with our microlaser peels to 4-6 weeks with more intensive resurfacing.
Microlaser peels are terrific minimal down time resurfacing procedures that deliver impressive results. The immediate recovery is about three days. For comparison, one micropeel is equivalent in depth to about ten treatments of conventional microdermabrasion. It provides a general refreshing of the complexion, eliminating fine lines, improving texture and removes superficial age spots.
Medium depth laser peels are full epidermal peels. They achieve more dramatic reduction in fine lines and wrinkles as well as remove pigmented lesions. The recovery is longer, ranging about 1 week.
Deep laser peels penetrate further into the dermis to bring about the most dramatic improvement when skin tightening and deep wrinkle reduction are the target. This peel can be applied to the entire face or more selectively to problem areas such as the upper lip, forehead and around the eyes. The immediate recovery period can be around 14 days, but prolonged redness may exist for several weeks.
