It would be an over simplification to assume that laser treatments alone are curative for the treatment of acne. Rather, it is important to combine laser treatments with tried and true skin care treatments which encourage exfoliation, cell turnover, decrease bacterial counts in sebaceous glands and reduce inflammation. This may involve beta-hydroxy acid washes (salicylic acid), topical retinoids, antibiotic creams and oral antibiotics. Accutane(isotretinoin), an oral retinoid, is a treatment of last resort, as long term health concerns with the usage of this medication have been raised. Lasers can complement medical treatments in several ways and may even circumvent the need for Accutane.

Mid-infrared lasers such as Smoothbeam by Candela target sebaceous gland hyperactivity by delivering sufficient energy to the glands to partially disrupt their activity leading to less oil production. Other devices produce light energy in the blue spectrum (Blue-U, Clearlight) which is lethal to the bacteria that live in these glands and contribute to acne breakouts. And, yet other treatments use vascular laser wavelengths (V-Beam) to quiet the inflammatory response that accompanies acne breakouts.

The ideal way to manage acne is to combine these treatments into a regimen that targets all the basic elements in the cascade that contributes to these outbreaks. A complete treatment involves a series of sessions, separated by 2 to 4 weeks, where one or more laser procedure is performed.
