Contemporary Trends in Facial Rejuvenation
The most recent trends in facial plastic surgery are, in fact, not really surgical at all. Contemporary aesthetic surgeons are as likely to reach for a laser as much as they are a scalpel when treating individuals with aging related concerns. Minimally invasive procedures represent a rapidly growing dimension of most aesthetic practices. This trend is driven by consumer demands for procedures which are tailored to active lifestyles with rapid recoveries as well as the desire to avoid general anesthetics when contemplating aesthetic procedures. Furthermore, many individuals are seeking procedures which are restorative and preventative as part of more global health and wellness related trends. Our practice has embraced this philosophy and strives to achieve maximal aesthetic results using the latest minimally invasive techniques.
Laser light is a very pure, focused form of light energy. The wavelength of light emitted by a laser determines its specificity. Lasers can be used to treat a broad variety of skin conditions including acne, rosacea, melasma, facial scarring, blood vessels, pigmented lesions, and skin laxity. It is incumbent upon the treating physician to have a broad array of lasers to properly address a variety of skin conditions. In addition to the laser, the method of skin cooling utilized during treatments is an important factor which greatly influences patient comfort and safety. We provide a supplemental skin cooling process during treatment sessions using forced cold air.
I am delighted to introduce the “laser-lift” process. It relies on three different lasers/light based modalities to achieve a multidimensional improvement in facial and/or body skin. First, intense pulsed light is used to treat dark spots and broken capillaries. Then, fractional laser resurfacing, is performed. This exciting break-through technology achieves aggressive resurfacing with minimal recovery time using microfine laser spots. Finally, skin tightening is achieved with an infrared light source, causing a gradual but noticeable tightening of lax skin on the areas applied including the face, neck, arms and abdomen.
Clearly, individuals have many options for aesthetic services. When choosing a practice or establishment, one should begin by asking some very fundamental questions such as: who operates and performs laser treatments? It is our position that lasers are medical devices and should be operated under direct medical supervision. We own and operate six lasers, and have access to other for specialized applications. This is certainly convenient for our patients, but more importantly, translates into greater proficiency with the devices. We do not rely on the expertise of an outside vendor when it comes to laser care.
Complementing laser based treatments are injectable materials.
Botulinum toxin
(BOTOX®™) is among the most common procedure being performed and its application is principally to reduce fine lines and wrinkles through selective muscular paralysis. Fillers are materials used to add bulk to the undersurface of the skin in areas of deep wrinkling such as cheek folds or acne scars. Hyaluronic acid, a normal component of our skin, is a favored new filler. Alternatively, body fat can be transferred to the face to achieve more comprehensive and permanent volume restoration.
The final dimension in minimally invasive techniques, involves incisionless soft tissue suspension. This is an office-based procedure accomplished through the use of specialized sutures placed through small needle holes in the skin, which are then tunneled to lift and suspend sagging tissue. This procedure is appropriate for individuals with moderate skin laxity not yet ready or interested in a conventional facelift procedure.
