Volume restoration of the aging face is a central tenet of contemporary approaches to facial rejuvenation. Microfat transfer is a process by which volume is restored to the face thorough a series of injections of small volumes of fat to recreate the normal contours of youth. Smile lines, lips, corners of the mouth and frown lines are the areas most commonly treated. It can also be used more globally to reshape the cheeks and face as well. Sometimes it is necessary not only to add volume to the face, but also remove small amounts of fat as well. This rebalancing process is sculptural in nature and hence the term liposculpture has been applied to the overall approach.

Procedure

The procedure is performed in either the office setting or operating room depending on what additional procedures are being performed. When done in the office, local infiltration anesthetics, and mild oral sedation is all that is necessary for patient comfort. Small volumes of a patient’s own fat is harvested from the flank or abdomen with tiny cannulas. The fat is processed and then injected with a small needle into areas of soft tissue deficiency. Typically, more than one session is necessary, and subsequent sessions are separated by several months.

Recovery

It is common to experience some swelling and mild discoloration to the skin after the procedure. This selling is most intense the first week. The lips in particular may experience swelling. There can be some mild tenderness from the sight were fat was taken. These with medications your surgeon can prescribe for you. You are advised to restrain from physical activity from physical activity for at least one week after fat transfer.
