As a result of the normal aging process, our facial fat tends to redistribute and concentrate in certain areas such as the jowls and under the neck. Frequently, the neck and jowl line can be improved with the elimination of this excess body fat. Liposuction removes fat incrementally through small incisions using small canullas. This procedure can be performed alone or in combination with other rejuvenation approaches.

The Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction can be performed either in the office or in the operating room depending on what additional procedures are being performed. When performed in the office, infiltration analgesia and mild oral sedation is all that is necessary for patient comfort. A small incision is made under the chin in an existing skin crease. A blunt tipped narrow metal tube, called a cannula, is introduced through the incision. The cannula is attached to tubing which connects to a suction pump. A series of fine passes is made under the skin removing the desired amount of fat. The small incision is closed with fine sutures. The neck is generally wrapped with a firm dressing at the termination of the procedure.

Recovery

After the procedure, the patient is instructed to wear a tight supporting garment, provided by our office, around the neck as much as possible for a period of one week. Afterwards, this garment is only required at night. A mild degree of swelling and tenderness is to be expected, which is easily controlled with prescription medication prescribed by your surgeon. The patient is instructed to avoid rigorous exercise for about one week.
