FACIAL TRAUMA (FRACTURES and LACERATIONS)

As a Northeast regional referral center, we treat victims of facial trauma on a daily basis. These injuries are the result of personal assault, motor vehicle accidents, falls and sports injuries. We see the full spectrum of injuries from minor lacerations, abrasions, and nasal fractures, through to panfacial injuries involving fractures to the entire facial skeleton. This later category of injuries requires specialized training. Albany Reconstructive Surgeon, Dr. Falk is a fellowship trained craniofacial trauma surgeon. He is involved with the teaching of facial trauma on a local and regional level. He is part of the teaching core of several craniofacial organizations including AO North America and the ACMF.

When approaching complex facial injuries, we utilize sound craniofacial principles including wide exposure through approaches that avoid placing incisions on areas of the face that are directly exposed. Fractures are reduced to near anatomic perfection, and fixation is accomplished with titanium plates and screws along key facial buttresses to guide healing. Sometimes additional bone grafting from the skull or other sites is required. Our approach incorporates some of the latest techniques including endoscopic approaches to limit incisions and facility quicker recoveries. We also utilized some of the newest implant materials including resorbable plating systems. Adapting these strategies, provide the best opportunity for full recovery with normal appearance and function. Long after the initial injury, there can be residual deformities of the skin that can be helped with a combination of plastic surgery techniques and laser procedures.
