Keloids are overgrowths of abnormal scar tissue that behave like tumors in the manner in which they expand and distort adjacent normal tissue. Certain racial groups, blacks in particular, are more prone to form keloids. The management of keloids, is very challenging and despite the best intentions, relapse is a real and difficult problem. Although keloids can occur at any site of previous wounding, we tend to see and treat keloids of the ear that result from piercings. These keloids are treated with protocols that incorporate injection therapy with steroids and other anti-metabolites, pressure dressings, surgery, and sometimes, as a last resort radiation therapy. Using this approach, we have been successful in controlling the majority of keloids that we see.
