Treatment of Skin Lesions and Skin Defects

Albany Skin Cancer Surgeon, Dr Falk treats a variety of non-cancerous (benign), pre-cancerous and cancerous (malignant) skin lesions of the face, scalp and neck. It takes a well-trained eye to discern the differences between these kinds of lesions, and when in doubt, a biopsy is indicated.

Some examples of the kinds of benign lesions we regularly treat include age spots (lentigenes), stuck-on looking brown spots (seborreic keratosis), moles (melancocytic nevi), and red scaly patches (actinic keratosis). We stress the importance of prevention and encourage our patients to use sunscreen and other wear protective clothing and hats. Topical medications such as retinols, anti-metabolites, and immune modulators into our treatment program. Specific lesions are removed using a variety of modalities including cryogen therapy (liquid nitrogen), laser ablation or radiosurgery with the Ellman radiosurgery device. With this assortment of devices we are able to remove many benign skin lesions/ moles with little to no scarring.

The common skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanomas. Optimal skin cancer treatment involves a coordinated care between the dermatologist and reconstructive surgeon, and we often reconstruct defects created by the Mohs surgical technique that thoroughly removes only the cancerous lesion sparing as much normal tissue as possible. The repairs generally rely on local flaps expertly fashioned for the facial defect. This involves a combination of training, attention to detail, and aesthetic judgment.
